What does it mean to be a ProFirst Collision Shop?

As the car manufacturing industry becomes more reliant on technological advancements, Manufacturers are requiring an increase in specialized training for their certified collision repair facilities. Once repair shops complete the designated training, the Manufacturers can be confident that their vehicles are being repaired to the quality standards held by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

Recently, Today’s Collision received the I-CAR GOLD status designation. This was the first step in preparing for our Honda and Acura specific training. I-CAR (The Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) is an international, not-for-profit organization dedicated to training those in the collision industry with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve a complete and safe repair.

The Gold Class designation lets you know a collision repair shop has trained technicians who know how to repair your vehicle properly. Approximately 10% of collision repair shops currently complete the rigorous training requirements needed to meet the Gold Class standard. Businesses that earn Gold Class status are proud of their accomplishment and will typically display the Gold Class logo to help you identify them as highly trained repair facilities.

In addition to the I-CAR Gold Class designation, each ProFirst shop has received Honda-and Acura-specific training through I-CAR. The training provides Honda-specific information about vehicle construction materials and general repair considerations, specific repair procedures, manufacturer’s position statements relative to vehicle repair, hybrid electric and alternative fuel vehicle repair considerations, and more. Every ProFirst collision repair facility has the distinction of being an I-CAR Gold Class Professional.

We are extremely proud of our employees in completing this extensive training process, and are excited to continue to partner with the Honda and Acura dealerships in the area to bring the highest quality repairs to their customers.

Saturday, January 18, 2014: Today’s Collision team members from Chelsea, Malden, our newly opened Service Center in Malden and our Enterprise Associates left their friendships behind as they hit the Track 2 indoor course at F1 Boston Kart Racing in Braintree, MA.

We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off our 25th Anniversary Year than to have an Employee Kart Racing Event.  Close to 40 drivers hit this 240 meter (787 feet) in length course, consisting of rolling curves and 4 hairpin turns.  The team attended a safety briefing with course instructions and suited up in driving gear and helmets.  We had a few penalties and one kart needing minor repairs.  (There were plenty of us on hand for that!)

After preliminary heats, and one consolation round, Kyle Bryant emerged as our 1st Place winner, Zach Sullivan, our 2nd Place winner, and Fredy-Cadavid-Vargas our 3rd Place winner.  Kyle’s average speed on his winning race was 42.87 MPH.  Congratulations Kyle!  After the exhausting 20-lap final race, we enjoyed a catered event in the Track 2 lounge.  Check out our event photos and race results.

Hosted by our Malden Location, Today’s Employees attended an I-CAR Blueprinting Course on June 15, 2013. This class will give them accreditation towards gold-class certification. Congratulations Team!

Formed by the collision industry in 1979, I-CAR, the Inter-Industry …Conference on Auto Collision Repair, is a not-for-profit training organization focused on education, knowledge and solutions for the Collision Repair Inter-Industry. The primary goal of I-CAR is complete and safe repairs for the ultimate benefit of the consumer.

A review of the shop’s activity from Carol Jordan.

In spite of a mild winter and a minimal amount of snow, the shop has been bustling with auto accident claims.  Our average is 64-72 cars in the shop at all times.  Most accidents are minor–rear end collisions and “hit while parked.”  We do have several vehicles with serious damage – from T- bone accidents in intersections to deer strikes.   On one occasion, a driver trying to avoid a large Recliner chair that was sitting on Rte. 495 lost control of his vehicle, hit another vehicle and pushed that vehicle into a ditch!  The recliner was deemed a total loss. The other vehicle, a 2007 BMW, was towed to our shop and repaired to its original condition!   Other unusual causes of accidents are bicyclists hitting cars, which are rare but cause lots of damage, tree limbs falling on vehicles (after a storm), and shopping carts and, again rarely happening–large dogs running into cars–sometimes causing major damage.

Parking garages can be another source for damage to your vehicle.  Lime deposits on the ceilings of garages can leak onto a vehicle and can be cause for major repair work.    This can happen in residential, commercial and airport parking garages.  Watch the valets too!  Valets parking your vehicle can sometimes cause (and sometimes not report) damage by hitting concrete barriers or other vehicles.  Be sure to walk around your car after valet parking.

A fair amount of the accidents we see can be accredited to “driver distraction.”   Texting, talking on the phone, applying make-up and eating fast food are common distractions. On one occasion, a customer of ours reported a gentleman talking on his cell phone and reading the newspaper on Rte. 95 in rush hour traffic.

Most minor accidents (such as bumper repair) take 3-5 days to repair.  Major accidents can take two weeks to one month to repair.  When the airbags deploy, the job is more labor intensive.  We’ve not seen too many vehicles with air bag deployment in spite of the amount of damage to vehicles—a testament to the structure of new vehicles – meant to absorb the shock and crumple on the outside and keep passengers safe in the cabin.

That said, we are constantly busy with new accident claims and repair work.   We are here to guide you through that process and can use our knowledge and experience in dealing with most every type of accident to make sure that the process is streamlined and informational for you.
